St William of York: Life and Miracles

St William, twice-elected Archbishop of York, suffered deposition and exile. However, he returned to York in triumph and famously performed his first miracle at the Ouse Bridge. This course will explore the life of William FitzHerbert from the time of his appointment as Treasurer of York Minster to his afterlife as the saint of York, venerated in the most elaborated shrine in the country. The course will be based on medieval sources, both documentary and visual.
