Philosophy of Art

Tuesday 20 April 2021, 7.00PM to 9.00pm

Speaker(s): Jamie Cawthra BA MRes PhD

Have you ever wondered what makes something art? What makes something beautiful? Whether natural vistas and peacock tails are beautiful in the same way as sculptures and paintings? On this course, we will interrogate art and the aesthetic, exploring its philosophical dimensions. We will look at the value of the term ‘art’, what influences our judgements of taste, and what sort of objects these judgements can reasonably apply to. We will also touch on the unique puzzles of forgery, fiction, photography and more.
