What was the Holy Roman Empire?

In the year 800 Charlemagne was crowned as the first Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Leo III and is considered to have founded the Holy Roman Empire, which eventually included most of western and central Europe. This course traces the evolution of the Holy Roman Empire, its expansion during the medieval period, its dominance of sixteenth century Europe under the Habsburg family and its eventual dissolution by Napoleon in 1806.
