The Cistercians and their Yorkshire Monasteries

Saturday 27 February 2021, 10.00AM to 1:00 PM

Speaker(s): Cristina Figueredo

After the Norman Conquest of England, there was an explosion of monastic foundations throughout the country. Yorkshire, in particular, witnessed the revival of monasticism.  Between the 11th and the 16th centuries, monasteries became an integral part of the social, economic, and cultural landscape. This course will explore the history of Cistercian monasteries in Yorkshire, from their foundation to their dissolution. The course will study both the magnificent buildings and the lives of medieval monks, nuns, and donors.
