In 1978, the feminist publisher Virago Press established the Virago Modern Classics imprint with the mission to publish women’s fiction that was out of print or had been largely forgotten. The list challenged the accepted definition of ‘classic’ literature, and championed writers including Rebecca West, Antonia White, Barbara Comyns, Margaret Atwood and Angela Carter. We will read a range of iconic Virago novels and will study how the formation of a female literary tradition redrew the map of literary history.

So we can continue to support our students, we are working towards putting this course online, by setting up live seminars that students can join through Collaborate - a tool for online meetings that is similar to making video calls.
Students joining our online courses would need access to a computer, laptop or tablet with a microphone, and a reliable broadband connection. You can join the seminars using a smartphone, but this would make viewing any presentations difficult.
