From his famous boys’ adventure story Treasure Island to the eerie Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and a succession of brilliant late stories exploring the South Pacific, Robert Louis Stevenson produced some of the most enduring fiction of the late nineteenth century. This course will examine the full range of Stevenson’s achievement, considering his Scottish and British contexts, his interest in science and religion, his ambivalent engagement with the colonialism of the day, and his many afterlives in contemporary culture.
