This course is designed as an introduction to the epic history of Paris from its foundation as a provincial Roman city to its present-day status as cultural capital of the world. Focusing on the city’s magnificent art and architecture, we will trace Paris’ history through sites such as the Baths of Cluny, Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Louvre, the Place de la Bastille, Montmartre, and the Center Pompidou, among others. The course will consider Paris as a global centre, addressing how its long cultural history still impacts its identity in the twenty-first century.
