Today, Impressionist blockbuster exhibitions draw enormous crowds, but this was not the case when Impressionist works first appeared. The innovations and experimentation with paint, composition and subject-matter found in these works were perceived by many original viewers as signs of incompetency; others even viewed them as dangerously transgressive. This course will examine fascinating paintings by artists including Renoir, Monet, Morisot and Degas which changed the direction of art and reveal some of the enormous changes taking place in the capital during the nineteenth century.
