The months between September 1978 and May 1979 undoubtedly marked a turning point for the United Kingdom when James Callaghan’s Labour Government was replaced by a resurgent Conservative Party, giving Britain its first female prime minister. Why did public opinion turn so dramatically against the hitherto popular and trusted Callaghan? To what extent had the Conservative Party reinvented itself after Ted Heath’s departure in 1975? What did Mrs Thatcher promise the voters? And did she keep her manifesto commitments?
