Once the richest abbey in the north of England, its ruins now delight every visitor to the Museum Gardens. This course will explore the history of the great Abbey of St Mary, from its foundation before 1088 to the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII, focusing on the major role the abbey played in the history of York. We will also study the history of the Abbot’s Manor and explore its buildings as well as the abbey’s ruins in situ. It is anticipated that this course will be held at the King’s Manor.
