The French Revolution in 1789 was a defining moment in European history. Within four years, the French monarchy had come to a bloody end, replaced by a republic which embroiled itself in a titanic European conflict that was to last until 1815. Both the Revolution and the wars that followed it helped to characterise European politics for the next hundred years. This course will trace these events and will consider their immense social and political impact.
