Heretics and Inquisitors in Thirteenth Century Languedoc

Tuesday 21 January 2020, 7.00PM to 9.00pm

Long before their use in Spain, the methods of inquisition were developed by the medieval Church to combat heretical movements in thirteenth century Languedoc and the Cathars and Waldensians. This course will trace the origins of these groups in the growing lay spirituality of the time, discuss what we can know of their teachings and their appeal, and explore the various responses of the Church, as well as examining the place of both heretics and inquisitors in modern culture.
