The Mysteries of Mother Shipton and her Links to York

Saturday 23 November 2019, 1.30PM to 4.30pm

In this half-day course, we will trace the legend and historical fact behind this famous prophetess, whilst considering the nature of prophecy. This curious Tudor wisewoman from Knaresborough - but associated with York and Cawood - has fascinated generations, yet the truth stays elusive. Did she really foretell Wolsey’s downfall, the siege of York, the internet, air travel and the end of the world? We will explore how she rivalled Nostradamus, but became the inspiration for the first pantomime dame. She also remains important for Yorkshire’s tourism, with her foresight retaining significance today.
