Britain's longest-serving Prime Minister of the twentieth century remains a divisive (and often misunderstood) historical figure. This course will endeavour to clarify the background, career and political ideology of Britain’s first female premier, before examining the priorities of her three successive governments. Several key events - the Falklands War, the Miners' Strike, and the privatisation of the state sector - will then be investigated in detail. Finally her sudden fall from office, and her controversial legacy, will be carefully considered.
