In this course we shall look at Sainte-Chapelle, built between 1242 and 1248, at the heart of the King’s Palace in Paris to serve as reliquary of the most holy relics of Christendom of the time. The course will discuss the acquisition of the treasure which made its owner the most powerful monarch on the continent, discuss the exegetical and hagiographical iconography of the exquisite stained glass windows and observe the employment of the relics as a state-building tool.
