Medieval Yorkshire Monasteries

Wednesday 2 October 2019, 1.00PM to 3.00pm

After the Norman Conquest of England, there was an explosion of monastic foundations throughout the country. Yorkshire, in particular, witnessed the revival of monasticism. Between the eleventh century and the Reformation, monasteries became part of the social, economic, and cultural landscape. This course will explore the history of monasteries from their foundation through their age of splendour until the Dissolution. By focusing on Yorkshire monastic houses, the course will study the lives of medieval monks, nuns, and donors.
