Andersen transformed ‘folk tale’-based fairy stories with original tales full of moralising, psychological insight and social awareness. Many of his heroines find a not-so-happy ending, yet they teach us something about ourselves, expectations, and the brutality of the world. Andersen’s journey from the slums of Copenhagen to the salons of Europe as the most celebrated writer of the age is, like his stories, as full of grief as glittering prizes… not for those who believe ‘they all lived happily ever after’.
