Titian was (with Michelangelo) the most celebrated artist of his age, courted by emperors, popes and the famous across Europe. We will consider Titian’s art in its Venetian and broader Italian contexts, and trace his development from protégé of Giorgione to mentor of Veronese, considering issues of technique, patronage and genre, as well as his professional self-fashioning in the light of emerging theories of ‘the artist’. We will focus throughout on his extraordinary creativity, deep into inventive old age. It is anticipated that this course will be held at the King’s Manor.
