Deriving its name from the famous London store, the Italian art nouveau movement is commonly referred to as ‘Liberty’, a name which evokes the spirit of creative freedom often associated with this artistic style. This course will examine a variety of disciplines and practices - from painting to architecture and from decorative arts to graphic design - placing them within the contemporary international art scene. The 1902 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative Arts in Turin will provide the opportunity to relate and contrast the art nouveau tendencies in Italy with those of other countries.
