Leonardo da Vinci is perhaps the exemplary polymath: artist, scientist, engineer et al. This course will focus on Leonardo as painter, and will place his art in its social, historical and art-historical contexts, as well as considering how medium, location, patronage and technique contribute to the meaning and effect of particular works. We will think about how painting as a practice might relate to Leonardo’s other activities, as part of his restless enquiry into the workings of the world. It is anticipated that this course will be held at the King’s Manor.
