Centuries before the Renaissance proper, the twelfth century witnessed an explosion of intellectual activity which produced some of the most original thinkers, rulers, writers and artists in the Middle Ages. Romanesque art and architecture, as well as manuscript illumination, reached new heights. Philosophical debates and scholastic development would culminate in the creation of universities. In addition, vernacular literatures were established and courtly love developed. This course will study the major literary, artistic, and philosophical achievements in this remarkable century.
