Mounted on a charger, fully armed, whether in a joust or in battle, the knight has become an icon of the Middle Ages. This course will explore the historical context within which the knight rose to prominence, whether or not the code of chivalry shaped his actions, and the socio-political world he inhabited, from the eleventh to the fifteenth centuries. It will draw on contemporary accounts from knights themselves, who have described their experiences in paradigmatic battles like Agincourt.
