Saturday 27 January 2018, 10.00AM to 4.30pm

When is it insulting to be called an owl? What is a liver eater? How does a medieval poetry battle work? This course provides the answers to these questions and an introduction to some of the social, political and cultural conflicts of the Middle Ages, through the study of contemporary dispute, profanity and insults. Analysing what is said and what cannot be said, we will also consider if there are universal taboos, and how derogatory terms can be challenged.
