It is difficult to imagine but until the nineteenth century Italy was but a collection of independent city-states and papal dominions. However, we can trace a recognisable ‘Italian’ spirit and ethos as early as the tenth or eleventh centuries. This course will study three of the most paradigmatic Italian cities; it will explore the way in which their enterprising spirit, their art, and their socio-political developments helped to shape modern Italy.
