We know from students with children that it can be difficult to find time to study; you’re often pulled in different directions and don’t always have the space or environment at home to study in the way that you’d like. That’s where the Library’s new Family Study Room comes in: it’s a dual use space, with half of the room given over for students with children to work and the other for your children to play. It will be an ideal space for short study sessions when you need to keep your children with you and occupied.
We’re intending for the room to be ready for the start of the next academic year, but we wanted to give you an early heads up of our plans. We’ll share an update soon with more detail about what will be included in the room, but we expect to provide study desks, PCs and armchairs for the adults and toys, furniture and books for the children - we’re a library after all! The room will be located on the ground floor of the Burton building, benefiting from close proximity to baby changing facilities and the Library Help Desk as well as a level entrance for easy access with pushchairs. Registration will be required to use the room. Any age of child will be welcome, but we’re especially designing it with under-12s in mind.
The room will initially be available on a trial basis for 6 months, during and after which we’ll review how it’s working. We have set up a User Advisory Group including students with children and others who will help us to evaluate the success of the space and any changes we need to make after the initial trial. If you have any questions or if you would like to join our User Advisory Group please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. We’d also be interested to hear from you if you’re aware of other groups of students who might benefit from similar adjustments from the Library.
We look forward to sharing more updates soon about the Family Study Room!
