24 Hour Library Study Areas Launching in Vanbrugh and the Ron Cooke Hub

Posted on 21 November 2022

Two new Library Study Areas are opening, one on Campus East and one on Campus West. Both will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

A room with desks and chairs

The Vanbrugh space (pictured) is a Quiet Zone and is located on the ground floor: room V/N/058, with access for anyone with a University Card. The room contains 21 study spaces, and will include some PCs which will be arriving shortly. We’ll also be putting some ‘bookshelf wallpaper’ up and want to know which books we should include on it! Tell us your favourite ever book via this form and we’ll try and include its title on the wallpaper…

The Ron Cooke Hub Library Study Area is spread across the 1st and 2nd floor, at the end of the building nearest the lake. This will be a Studious Buzz Zone with around 35 study spaces, and COMING SOON are our new Book Lockers. These are in place already but the software takes some work to set up - we will be launching these shortly (keep an eye on our social media for updates: @UoYLibrary on InstagramTikTok and - for now at least - Twitter). In short, you’ll be able to get books delivered to Campus East, from both the Morrell and King’s Manor Library, and pick them up any time of day or night from the new lockers.

Why have we created these new spaces?

We’ve created these spaces because we want to give students flexibility about when they study. Both of these new hubs are Library Study Areas rather than full libraries - so they don’t contain any of our collections, and are designed purely as places to work.

We know some students would like the main Library on Campus West to be open 24 hours a day, every day. Currently it is open from 8am to midnight, and we extend to 24 hours during the common assessment periods; when we are open all night the number of people who actually use the building after midnight is very, very small. We have capacity for more than 1,200 people and around 3% of that capacity is used in total across a busy night. As the University aims to be more sustainable, we simply can’t justify the power and resources it takes to keep such a large building open all night, all year round, for the level of use it gets.

However we want to support people who want or need to study at atypical hours, and we really hope these two new Library Study Areas will allow us to do that. Between them they have more than enough capacity to accommodate the number of students we have studying in the library between 12am and 8am even on our busiest nights, and with the addition of the Book Lockers in the Ron Cooke Hub we hope to improve the library experience for students on both campuses. Now you can study year-round in a scholarly environment, any time, day or night.
