A library timeline for the vacation

Posted on 6 December 2021

There are a lot of key dates for the next few weeks, and we’ve brought them together below.

This post was updated on December 9 in light of the new Government guidance around the pandemic; see our further update about how the Library is responding to the Government's Plan B restrictions, including moving our Help Desk online over the next few weeks.

December 6: A blended approach to study space bookings, and King’s Manor Library is now closed

In response to your feedback we now have a mixture of bookable and non-bookable library study spaces. Here’s a video to get you up to speed on this: it’s only a couple of minutes long and tells you all you need to know:

If you want to know more about the feedback you gave us which drove this new approach, we wrote about why we’re moving to a blended approach. We’ve updated our Study Spaces webpages too, which now have all the current information about what is available.

King’s Manor Library is now closed for refurbishment and we intend to reopen on January 11.

December 13: Mandatory Face-Coverings, Virtual Help Desk and Book Takeaway deadlines

The Government Guidance for wearing of face-coverings has been updated again (as of December 8) and it will be University policy that face-coverings are required in communal areas in-doors. If you forget yours we'll provide a disposable one - just ask at the Help Desk or the Marshal point on the way in.

If you need Postal Loans or Scan & Send items from Book Takeaway, we strongly recommend you submit them by December 13 at the absolute latest - this is to give us time to process the requests, and the postal service time to send them out. Requests received after this date are likely to be processed in the new year.

Also from December 13 the Library Help Desk will become virtual and the physical Help Desk in the Morrell will close. You can contact us by Chat and email

December 24 onwards: Christmas opening hours in full

At present we have no plans to close the library or change our opening hours. Our current opening hours 8am to midnight will continue through most of December. We can't guarentee this won't change because we don't know if there will be new developments with the pandemic and / or Government guidance for Higher Education, but at present we don't intend to close or reduce our hours.

The Library will be open until 4pm on Friday December 24. We are closed for December 25 and 26, then for the period December 27 to 30 the Library will be open from the hours of 9am to 7pm daily, operating as self-service: the Library and IT Help Desks will remain unavailable during this period.

On New Year's Eve, December 31, the Library will be open between 9am and 4pm, and we will be closed on January 1.

On January 2 and 3, 2022, the Library Buildings will be open between 9am and 7pm, still operating as self-service with the Help Desks remaining closed.

Our normal service hours of 8am to midnight will resume from January 4.

24 hour opening for the exam week

All being well, for the week beginning January 10 we will move to 24 hour opening for the exam period

Finally from January 17, our regular 8am to midnight hours return.

As always, if you have any questions or comments then contact us via Chat, email, phone or social media.
