Christmas borrowing, opening hours, and SCONUL access

Posted on 19 November 2018

Over the Christmas vacation, borrowing times and recall periods will be longer. The Library will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day. If you're away from the University, the SCONUL access scheme allows you to use resources at other universities.

During the Christmas vacation, our flexible loans system will operate as follows:

  • 7 days to return an item if a request is placed
  • 7 days to collect a requested item once returned
  • 7 days borrowing period if there is a queue of requests

Note that the flexible loans service applies to all loan items, with the exception of Key Texts.

Due dates

Books cannot be due back between Saturday 22 December and Wednesday 2 January. Any books that would have been due in this period will instead be due for return on Thursday 3 January.

All items are subject to recall during the vacation. Our request system still operates throughout the Christmas vacation, with the following adjustments:

  • If an item is requested after Saturday 1 December, you will be given 7 days to return it.
  • If an item is requested after Friday 14 December, you will not need to return it until Thursday 3 January.

If an item is recalled during the vacation, you don't need to visit us to return it. Post it back to us, and we'll use the date you post it as the return date.

Using online resources and other university libraries

Subject guides and e-resources

You can still access ejournals, databases and ebooks through the library website while you're away from campus. Subject guides give you information about key online resources for your subject.

Using other university libraries

The SCONUL access scheme enables you to use the resources of other university libraries over the vacation, providing you have your University card. If you're an undergraduate, you can use the libraries for reference. If you're a postgraduate, you may also be able to borrow items. Find out more:
