New exhibition at the Minster Library

Posted on 27 October 2017

Dr Eric Durot of the History Department has curated a new exhibition 'England and the French Wars of Religion' which will be on display at the Minster Library until Tuesday 21 November. It displays 16th century pamphlets, held in the Minster Library, which reflect contemporary attitudes to the ongoing wars in France.

The French Wars of Religion (1562-1598) were of fundamental importance to the course of British History. The conflict was a highly topical issue on this side of the Channel, as shown by the pamphlets in the Old Palace. The newsletters, treatises and libels survive in originals or translations from the French, and were mainly printed in London. The audience for events in France was great because of their ramifications for the delicate political and religious situation in Elizabethan England.

The exhibition can be found in the Minster Library, located in the Old Palace, and is free to all visitors.
