The Library and The Borthwick Institute for Archives have been shortlisted for Outstanding Library Team in the Times Higher Education Leadership & Management (THELMA) Awards.
We have been recognised for our Archbishops’ Registers Revealed project that made the Registers of the Archbishops of York dating from 1225 available online. The registers survive as 44
parchment and paper volumes detailing the North’s history from the aftermath of the Magna Carta in 1225 to the first Civil War in 1646. In the 10 years leading up to the digitisation of the collection, 12 external users accessed them on-site at the Borthwick. Since makin
g the Registers available online in March 2015 there has been a 2,800% rise in external users.
We nominated this project for the award as we believe it’s a great example of a project which brings together different teams within the institution, and which offers benefits not only to members of the University, but also to the wider community. The teams involved have worked together to supplement continued access to physical archive documents with enhanced interactive online versions, creating hands-on learning opportunities helped secure our nomination. .
This wasn’t simply a Library and Archives project; there was a high degree of collaboration with the Department of History and the Centre for Medieval Studies, along with the National Archives to create a specialist taxonomy meeting academic standards and requirements.
The winners of the THELMA awards will be announced on Thursday 22 June.
