New reading list system

We are excited to announce that we have selected a new reading list system to replace EARL.

We have made this change as a direct result of feedback from academic staff and students about the usability and functionality of the old system. We’ll be working hard over the summer to ensure the system is up and running for the start of the 2017-18 academic year.

Benefits of the new system

The new system offers a more intuitive interface for all users, and will make it easier for you to compile and edit reading lists. The Library will also be able to manage access to high demand items more efficiently: for example we’ll be able to see if a book appears on more than one reading list. We’ll also be able to provide you with better information on how your lists are being used.

We will no longer be calling the system EARL. For clarity and simplicity we will be referring to the new system as Reading Lists.

What does this mean for Summer term 2017?

You don’t have to do anything different to submit or edit your reading lists for Summer term 2017.

After term ends on Friday 23 June you will not be able to edit or upload new reading lists until the VLE rollover in the summer vacation has been completed (currently scheduled to take place in the first week of July). This is to allow us to carry out essential work to migrate lists from the old system into the new system.

Your lists will still be viewable but will change to be ‘read only’. If you need to edit or upload a reading list after this date please get in touch with your academic liaison librarian and we will arrange for this work to be carried out.

Using the new system

Reading Lists will be available for you to use after the VLE has rolled over at the start of July. The Library will automatically migrate your existing lists to the new system.

Training on how to update your lists on the new system will be made available to you throughout the Summer vacation and start of next academic year. We will offer this via online materials and also hands-on workshops. We’ll be sending more information about this in due course.

Before Reading Lists is in place

Remember that if you have a new list, or you have significant changes to make to a current list, you can still submit this to the Library and we will make the changes you need. Please send the details via the usual form (login required).
