Level 1

Portuguese Level 1 (LFA00024L) course content

Prerequisites

The course is aimed at those with no previous knowledge of the target language. It is open to undergraduate and postgraduate students, staff and members of the public.

Contact time

19 x 2-hour classes plus end-of-year exams (oral and written); groups of up to 20 participants.

Aims

The course has two key aims. The first is to equip you with the necessary language skills to enable you to communicate with Portuguese speakers, or to make the most of time spent in Portugal. Secondly, you will acquire a grammatical grounding in Portuguese which will enable you to build on your skills through more in-depth study later on.

Objectives

At the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • talk about yourself and understand when others tell you about themselves and their circumstances
  • order food and drinks, understand menus and ask for details of dishes
  • ask for / understand directions, opening times and how to find facilities
  • book a hotel room in oral or written form, and enquire or complain about facilities
  • describe things and shop for what you want
  • make travel arrangements and check travel options
  • talk/write about what you have done and will be doing, e.g. work, education, jobs
  • feel confident about pronouncing Portuguese correctly, understanding and making yourself understood by a native speaker at an elementary level
  • understand short written texts from authentic Portuguese sources
  • write short messages and texts accurately

Teaching method

A communicative approach will be used throughout the course with an emphasis on speaking in real-life situations. You will required to obtain a textbook to support your studies (details from your tutor at the start of the course)

Time commitment

Alongside the class, you will be expected to spend around 2-3 hours each week on private study, as advised by your tutor. Work outside class may involve tasks such as online language learning activities on the VLE, completing worksheets or exercises from your textbook, revising work done in class, practising pronunciation and learning vocabulary/grammar.

Evaluation and certification

This course will be subject to end-of-year examinations and certification. An LFA certificate will be awarded to participants who pass the end of year exams (oral and written).

Level 2

Portuguese Level 2 (LFA00084L) course content

Prerequisites

This course is aimed at students with a good basic level of competence in Portuguese. Students at this level will have completed their GCSE or equivalent and/ or have some experience of living in a Portuguese speaking country. The course is open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, staff and members of the public.

19 × 2-hour classes plus optional end of course exam (oral and written); groups of up to 20 participants.

Aims

The key aim of the course is to extend your language skills in all skill areas (listening, speaking, reading, writing) and improve confidence, with the aim of increasing your ability to understand and communicate in Portuguese. Grammar revision will form part of the course to help improve accuracy.

Objectives

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • understand and participate fully in conversations that might occur in everyday situations with improved fluency and pronunciation
  • use a variety of idioms and structures to express yourself
  • cope with unexpected situations, problems and negotiations in Portuguese
  • fill in forms and write e-mails, short letters and brief accounts of events in Portuguese with a reasonable level of accuracy
  • understand short articles and information from authentic Portuguese sources, such as websites, newspapers, instruction leaflets and videos

Teaching method

Topics will be introduced and explored with the whole class. Students may then work in groups for part of the class e.g. for oral work. Audio or video listening exercises will take place regularly. Explanations and practice of grammar topics will be a regular part of the course in the form of revision, exercises in class and self-study. The class will be conducted mainly in Portuguese and students are encouraged to communicate with the tutor in Portuguese as much as possible.
