York Law School Clinic

As a professionally supervised service, our Clinic provides much needed help to the public and a powerful learning opportunity for our students. We opened it with the aim of providing free legal advice that would complement the legal service provision in the area.

A powerful learning experience

Students who take the Clinic as an assessed elective, and those who become involved in various aspects of its work, find it tremendously useful as a way to further develop the skills they build through our problem-based learning approach. Following a set of strict procedural and operational rules, all the work they carry out for the Clinic is closely monitored and supervised by an experienced solicitor.

The Clinic aims to deliver the highest possible standard of service, while maintaining its primary focus on educational opportunities. It provides advice in areas of law which both complement the students’ legal studies and which are needed by our clients, who come from the local area and within the University.

Working with other clinics around the world

We work with clinics in other law schools, both in the UK and abroad, in order to widen the learning experiences we can offer and provide support to students and academics who can benefit from our areas of expertise.

Our Clinic has hosted visits from Afghan, Pakistani, American and Australian lawyers and academics, and we've also sent our students to other countries, including India and South Africa.
