SANTI: British/Colombian Short Film Screening and Post-Screening Discussion

Wednesday 26 October 2022, 5.00PM to 6.00pm

Speaker(s): Writer/Director Harry Richards

On Wednesday 26th October 2022, the Department will screen the British/Colombian 10-minute British Film Institute (BFI)-selected short film, SANTI, followed by a discussion with its Writer/Director Harry Richards.

Film Synopsis: SANTI

The short follows a young Colombian man who receives a voice message from home while grappling with cultural differences at a London dinner party with his new English girlfriend. It was recently screened at the BFI Southbank as one of 50 films selected from over 1,000 submissions for the BFI Future Film Festival and at the inaugural Kingston International Film Festival in June.

SANTI is the third short written and directed by Richards, and a scene taken from his 90-minute feature film around the same subject, which the SANTI cast and crew plan to shoot across the UK and Colombia in late 2023/early 2024. The aim of the screening is to provide a forum for discussion amongst the York student community, and to raise awareness of cultural differences, loneliness and the yearning to belong.

Harry Richards is a graduate of the University of Edinburgh, emerging from the pandemic with a renewed perspective on the purpose of storytelling and a desire to reflect his generation’s multilayered relationship with identity. SANTI was filmed over one day in June 2021 with thirty volunteer graduates and current students from around the country; ten more volunteers were involved during post-production.
