On Wednesday 27th April 2022, Maria-Araxi Sachpazian and Vicky Papachristou (CITY College, University of York Europe Campus) will be presenting their joint work on EFL teacher identities in Greece. 

Teacher identities: A study in the construction of the EFL Teacher-self in Greece

Teaching, a career choice many make when they are still young, seems an easy professional solution, traditionally suited to women and affording a ‘’convenient’’ lifestyle. This description of teaching reflects an antiquated idea of what being a teacher actually entails. Likewise, the identity of teachers has changed and keeps shape-shifting, so it is in constant need of redefinition. Therefore, teachers need to construct a teacher-self who is fluid enough to allow them to grow and solid enough to give them professional grounding and orientation. 

This presentation aims to discuss the theoretical background behind research carried out in two phases in Greece and the findings of this research into how EFL teachers in Greece construct their professional identity. The aim of this research project is to define what being a 21st century language teacher means to the participants of this research and how they define the term ‘’ELT expert’’, especially in connection to their language fluency, age and years of experience. The research findings will allow us to discuss how the construction of this identity is related with their studies (retrospective connection) and/or age and professional experience. It is hoped that this research will shed light into potential changes that may be implemented in teacher education as well as help managers realise how they can mentor and boost the potential of their EFL teachers.
