This event is the third workshop-style seminar in a three-part series and will take place on Saturday 25 June 2022 at 10.00 (BST) via Zoom.

Seminar 3. 「聞き書き」を振り返ってReflection on interview & summarising verbatim accounts’

Our first seminar was an introductory session on Kikigaki (interviews and summarising verbatim accounts) in which participants had opportunities to learn about the technique and express their opinions and thoughts relating to the topic. They were then paired up to carry out Kikigaki activities in their own time after the seminar.  During the period between the first and the third seminars, three salon-type follow-up sessions were also organised to share questions and ideas regarding the activities among participants, organisers and Kikigaki facilitators in the first seminar.

In our third and final seminar, which is a continuation from the first seminar, participants will reflect on Kikigaki activities while reading each other’s written script and talking about its content and their experiences, including interview and writing processes.  The value and applicability of Kikigaki in everyday interactions and wider social contexts will also be discussed while considering the contents of discussions at the two seminars and salon-type sessions. This process will be facilitated by two invited speakers, Yoko Ando (freelance writer) and Mayumi Chiba (Senior Programme Officer at The Japan Forum) who also lead the first seminar.

This seminar will conclude with the reflections of self in dialogue based on activities, including Kikigaki activities and dialogical art appreciation, which were carried out within the three parts of this seminar series.

The following is an illustrative comment from one of the participants after the first seminar of Kikigaki introduction (original in Japanese, English translation by Yumi Nixon):

聞き書きの相手の方の世界に深く入り込むことを許されて、対話を通じて、人生におけることばと出会いの物語を紡ぐ。なんて貴重な経験でしょう。「人を知る」、そしてそれは「自分を知る」ことであり、それぞれに深い省察の経験になるのではないでしょうか。

(Translation: Kikigai allows us to appreciate and engage in the lives of others.  It is an extremely valuable experience in that we are able to weave our narratives on the topic of ‘language and encounter’ through dialogue. ‘Getting to know others’ is ‘getting to know ourselves’.  This activity provides us with a deep reflective experience.)

The seminar is open for those who participated in the first seminar, which was an introductory session on Kikigaki, or have previous experience in Kikigaki.

This CPD event will be conducted entirely in Japanese.
