Microsoft Office - now free for staff

Posted on 18 May 2015

We are pleased to announce that staff can now install Microsoft Office for free on up to five devices.

In October 2014 we announced that the University had subscribed to Office 365 in order to provide students with a free copy of the Microsoft Office suite. We are pleased to announce that staff can now take advantage of the same offer.

You can install Microsoft Office on up to five devices for free. These devices must be either:

  • a personally owned device (desktop, laptop, smartphone, tablet…); or
  • a University owned smartphone or tablet (providing this is in accordance with your department’s policies on installing software).

This offer must not be used to install Office on University owned desktops and laptops as these are already entitled to a version of Office under the Campus Agreement:

The Pro Plus version to which we have subscribed does not include OneDrive or Office Online. We are using the Office 365 subscription solely as a means to provide staff and students with a free copy of the Office suite. It is not intended as an alternative or replacement to our existing Google Apps service.

The subscription remains valid as long as you are a member of the University of York - when you leave the University you can choose to maintain your subscription by paying the appropriate fee to Microsoft.
