IT Services over Christmas

The IT Support Office will close on Christmas Eve, and reopen on 5 January. Other IT facilities will be available throughout the vacation period.


Network downtime Sunday 14 December: updated

On Sunday 14 December, the University's external network connections will be at risk for three hours between 9am and 12 noon while our network provider carries out major work.


Network maintenance Tuesday 9 December: several systems affected

On Tuesday 9 December, between 7am and 9am, we'll be carrying out emergency maintenance on one of our core networking routers, used to manage network traffic.

Many staff and students will be aware that the University lost external network connectivity on Tuesday (7 October) from around 10.30am till around 2pm. This issue has now been permanently resolved.

Customer Service Excellence award for Library, IT and Archives

The Information Directorate - Library, IT and Archives - has recently been accredited with the Customer Services Excellence (CSE) award. It’s the first department in the University to be awarded this standard - and one of the first converged services (ie Library and IT Services) in Higher Education to receive it.

Enhanced security features for Google

Google have recently introduced enhanced security features on Google Apps for Education. This allows them to alert account holders if they see suspicious activity - for example, a Google account being accessed from an unusual location - this is known as Login Challenge. They intend to alert people by text message, and as such will be encouraging account holders to register their phone number with them.


TrueCrypt security concerns

Withdrawal of Windows XP

Microsoft no longer provide updates for Windows XP, which makes machines running the operating system increasingly vulnerable to virus infections and other attacks. To protect our network, we will be restricting - and in most cases, removing - access to the network by Windows XP devices by the end of the summer vacation.

Changes to IT account expiry for staff leavers

From 1 May 2014, your IT account will expire one day after you leave the University. This is in response to the requirements of research funders and auditors, and ensures that we can prevent unauthorised access to University data.


Matlab site licence available to staff and students
