Shahadat Khandakar

Lecturer in Accounting at the University of York

Research Database

Shahadat is a Lecturer in Accounting at the University of York. As a critical and interdisciplinary researcher, he is inspired to highlight how inequality, lack of accountability, and other ill-suited practices in resource management restrict development potentials in organisations. Shahadat has researched inhuman and slavery-like labour control practices in tea plantations, and violations of workers’ rights in the ready-made garment sectors in Bangladesh; how culturally rooted silences and blind acceptance of authority negatively affected hospital governance in Japan. His work has been published in the Work, Employment and Society (WES), Social Science & Medicine, Supply Chain Management: an international journal and Journal of Accounting in Emerging Economies.

His current project focuses on how managerial discourses squeeze workers’ dignity and human rights while the accounting apparatus enables and justifies such inhuman practices in Global South. Another project is scrutinising how political discourse and positional power of elected officials are restraining local development opportunities and expanding inequality in an emerging country. Shahadat has extensively used interviews and non-participatory observations for data collection and thematic and discourse analysis for data analysis.

Shahadat is currently an Editorial Board member of the Journal of Accounting in Emerging Economies (JAEE) and ad-hoc reviewer of the Journal of Applied Applied Accounting Research, Journal of Critical Policy Studies, International Journal of Social Economics, Journal of Financial Reporting and Accounting, Journal of Islamic Accounting and Business Research and Journal of Governance and Regulations. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and is currently a member of the British Accounting Association, British Academy of Management and European Accounting Association. Shahadat has obtained his PhD from the University of Essex.
