Peter Sutoris
Lecturer (Assistant Professor) Department of Education
Peter is the author of books Visions of Development (Oxford University Press, 2016) and Educating for the Anthropocene (The MIT Press, 2022) and the documentary film The Undiscovered Country. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College and completed his PhD at University of Cambridge in 2019.
His research interests include the anthropology of development, the role of education in development, cross-cultural scalability of development interventions, development ethics, critical and decolonial perspectives on modernity and progress, post-development, development communications and environmental sustainability.
Peter has lived and worked in India, Nepal, South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Marshall Islands, and particularly focuses on South Asia and Southern Africa in his research. He has consulted on a range of education, public health and financial inclusion projects with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Education Development Trust, Oxford Policy Management, UNOPS, The Busara Center for Behavioural Economics and others. His latest work looks at grassroots environmental activism in low-income countries, political imagination and the culture of degrowth.
