Call now open for 2 visiting fellowships in IGDC starting 1 March 2023. Closing date for applications 6 January 2023

The Interdisciplinary Global Development Centre (IGDC) is a major interdisciplinary centre for research, teaching and partnership for global development based at the University of York.

Applications are now open for 2 visiting fellows of the IGDC starting 1 March 2023 and running until August 2023. The fellowships are intended to encourage outstanding early career researchers in global development to advance their career.

It is anticipated that the fellows will use the fellowships to apply for postdoctoral fellowships or other research funding and/or complete a significant publication.

Preference will be given to candidates who work on one or more of the following themes: social justice, global health, and sustainable environments. And one of the 2 fellowships will be reserved for candidates from countries on the DAC list of ODA recipients.

Fellows will be expected to:

  • Devote their time to research and writing.
  • Present their work in an IGDC seminar.
  • Organise an event (seminar, webinar, or workshop) for the IGDC around their research. Administrative support will be provided and there is a budget to bring in one or more UK-based speakers.
  • Contribute to the IGDC’s blog series or video channel.
  • Participate in the IGDC’s academic activities.

Fellows will become members of the IGDC team and be allocated a mentor. They can avail themselves of research support offered by the University of York, such as training in applying for post-doctoral fellowships. They will also have access to the library (including a wide range of e-journals) and other university facilities.

The fellowship carries a stipend of £1,000 which the fellows can use to advance their research career by, for example, attending a conference in their field or meet with potential partners. The IGDC will not be able to contribute to additional costs, such as living expenses and visa costs.

Eligibility

  • Candidates must have been successfully awarded their PhD by the time they apply and must be within 2 years of the award of their PhD.
  • Candidates are expected to be resident in or around York throughout the tenure of the fellowship so that they can play a full part in the activities of the IGDC.

Application process

Candidates need to submit:

  • A CV of no more than 3 pages.
  • A statement  of no more than 750 words outlining how they intend to use the fellowship to advance their career.
  • Name, position and organisation and email address of 1 referee.
