Can we do effective global development research in a carbon neutral way?

In this interactive and interdisciplinary panel discussion, five panellists will discuss the practicalities of carrying out global development research in a sustainable, carbon-neutral way. The panellists, representing different disciplines and career stages, will share their experiences and perspectives to invite discussion, and consider questions such as:
- Is global development research inherently more carbon-intensive than other research? Is carbon-neutral research actually achievable?
- Could global development research be just as effective if done on a lower-carbon model? Are there any downsides to lower-carbon approaches, e.g. for partners in the Global South?
- Is it hypocritical to be promoting equitable and sustainable societies while being a frequent flyer? How feasible is it to replace air flight with ground travel for global development researchers?
- Is a low-carbon research model incompatible with career development and promotion which emphasises the importance of international activities and collaborations? Should we prioritise air travel for early career researchers over senior academics?
