The Humanities Research Centre is located in the Berrick Saul Building at the heart of the Heslington West campus.

Opened in 2009, this beautifully designed building is centrally located in a quiet, wooded area of the campus. The aim of the Humanities Research Centre is to create a vibrant interdisciplinary research environment for staff and postgraduates in the arts and humanities departments.

This is being achieved by bringing together staff and students and visiting speakers from academia, the media, museums and the heritage sector at a wide variety of research events held in the Berrick Saul Building. These include: postgraduate forums, reading groups, seminars, workshops, research training events, poetry readings, public lectures, conferences and symposia.

Facilities include:

  • BS/003B (Foyer)
  • BS/005 (Bowland Auditorium) has fixed tiered seating for 144.
  • BS/007 (Jane Moody Boardroom) is fixed in boardroom style and seats 16 people.
  • BS/008 is set up in boardroom style for teaching and seats a maximum of 31 people. Tables and chairs may be moved, but must be returned to boardroom style afterwards.
  • BS/104 (The Treehouse) has a flexible layout, and contains 11 tub chairs, 70 conference chairs and 11 tables

BS/005 (Bowland Auditiorium), BS/007 (Jane Moody Boardroom) and BS/008 (seminar room) are teaching rooms managed centrally by Timetabling. Once timetables have been released, staff and students should submit any ad hoc room booking requests via Planon. If the room is available the booking is then reviewed and confirmed/denied by the Room Bookings Team.

The Treehouse (BS/104) and the Berrick Saul Building Foyer (BS/003B) are not teaching spaces and do not appear on Planon; instead, the rooms are managed by the Room Bookings Team/ Humanities Research Centre (HRC). Staff and students should submit requests to Room Bookings via email roombookings@york.ac.uk .If space is available, the request is then diverted to the HRC Administrator for approval.

If the request is submitted by a designated departmental room booker:

The Room Bookings Team can confirm the booking without approval from the HRC Administrator. Once the booking has been confirmed, it will appear in your list of bookings on Planon and you will receive an automated confirmation email.

To have the room set up in a particular way, please include this information when submitting your room booking request to room.bookings@york.ac.uk .

You can use MyTimetable to check availability of BS/005, BS/008 and BS/104.
