The Mark Stevens Scholarship

The Mark Stevens Scholarship was established in memory of Mark Stevens to provide support to talented students who have the academic potential to study at York, participate in student life at the University of York colleges and who have overcome significant barriers to their educational goals.

  • Funding: £5,000, paid in four instalments of £1,250, for two years in total.
  • Academic year: 2024/25
  • Open to: Students from BA History BA History and Economics BA English and History BA History and French (with a year abroad) BA History and History of Art BA History and Philosophy BA History and Politics
  • Qualification level: Undergraduate

The Mark Stevens Scholarship was established in memory of Mark Stevens, a former student at the Department of History and active member of Goodricke college. 

The Mark Stevens Scholarship is only available to students in the Department of History who are also active members of a University of York college (with special consideration for members of Goodricke college). 

Eligibility

Open to students from BA History BA History and Economics BA English and History BA History and French (with a year abroad) BA History and History of Art BA History and Philosophy BA History and Politics only.

The awards are open to students who start their second year of their undergraduate degree in History in September 2024.

To be considered for the Mark Stevens Scholarship award in History, you must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  1. Be in your second year of your Undergraduate degree in History. This includes students from a Combined Honours degree, providing that History is one of the subjects studied.
  2. Be a permanent resident in the UK, classified as Home (UK) in university admissions procedures. 
  3. Be an active member of a University of York college, with special consideration to applicants from Goodricke college.
  4. Your family has a Residual Household Income (RHI) of £42,875 or less (threshold is subject to change).
  5. You can show, via a written statement of up to 500 words, how you meet the following criteria:
    • How you have overcome barriers in your personal, social or domestic life to achieve your educational goals.
    • How you hope to contribute to society in the future following your studies.
    • How you participate in and contribute to college life.
    • Why you have applied for a Mark Stevens Scholarship and what difference it will make to your time at York.

Terms and conditions
  • If you are registered for a four-year degree, the scholarship is not paid in third year, which is usually the year abroad/placement component, and instead, the third and fourth instalment of £1,250 each will be paid in the final year of study.
  • The Residual Household Income (RHI) will automatically assess your eligibility using the information supplied in your application for Student Loans. For more information, please contact Student Finance England.
  • The Mark Stevens Scholarship cannot be held in conjunction with the Department of History BA Undergraduate Scholarship. If you already hold the History BA Undergraduate Scholarship, and you make a successful application for the Mark Stevens Scholarship in your second year, you would forfeit the remaining balance of the BA Scholarship.
  • The Mark Stevens Scholarship can be held in conjunction with other wider University awards.
