Biography

E. James West is a lecturer in US History, specialising in histories of race, rights, and media. Much of his work focuses on the Black Press and the Black experience in Chicago, although his publications and teaching interests stretch beyond the United States to include transnational Black activism and the media politics of the modern Black Atlantic.

Prior to joining York, James was a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at Northumbria University and a Fulbright scholar at Elon University in North Carolina.

Overview

E. James West is a lecturer in US History, specialising in histories of race, rights, and media. Much of his work focuses on the history of the Black Press and the Black experience in Chicago, although his publications and teaching interests stretch beyond the United States to include transnational Black activism and the media politics of the modern Black Atlantic.

He is the author of Ebony Magazine and Lerone Bennett Jr.: Popular Black History in Postwar America (2020), A House for the Struggle: The Black Press and the Built Environment in Chicago (2022), and Our Kind of Historian: The Work and Activism of Lerone Bennett Jr. (2022). He is currently completing his fourth book, a survey history of the modern Black Press in America for Edinburgh University Press, and his fifth book, a collection of letters to the editor in Ebony magazine.

His work has appeared or is forthcoming in more than two-dozen journals and edited collections, including Advertising & Society Quarterly, African American Review, The Black Scholar, Contemporary British History, the Journal of African American History, the Journal of American Studies, The Sixties, and Souls. He is a regular contributor to Black Perspectives, the Washington Post, The American Historian, and other outlets.
