York is one of the most attractive and fascinating cities in the UK, with an abundance of historic buildings and museums. It was founded by the Romans in 71 AD, as Eboracum, and captured in 866 by the Vikings, who called it Jorvik; under the Normans it was Everwic, and by 1300 came York, England's second capital. Witness to the major developments that shaped Britain across the centuries, York has also, been a part of global history through its commercial, industrial, and cultural connections. Enriched by its long and exciting history, York retains a strong sense of community, even as it has evolved into the modern, vibrant city that welcomes you today.
