In April 2016 Dr Jon Howlett, Lecturer in Modern Chinese History, visited Lund University in Sweden for a week using funding received from the Erasmus+ scheme.
While in Lund, Dr Howlett taught a class on Ming and Qing Dynasty China to History undergraduates and lectured on China in the 1950s in the department of Chinese Studies. He also taught a 'master class' in Chinese-language archival materials to Masters students and gave a research seminar paper titled 'Leaving Shanghai: a history of difficult choices, obstinance and separation after the Communist takeover of China (1949-1966)'.
Dr Howlett's visit marked the first staff teaching exchange using the Erasmus+ scheme, and built on strong existing links between the History Departments at York and Lund. These links include study abroad opportunities for undergraduates, as well as a PhD desk exchange scheme for our postgraduate students.
