Grant awarded to support digitization of the Registers of the Archbishops of York

Professor Mark Ormrod and colleagues in the Borthwick Institute for Archives have been awarded a grant of US $299,000 by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, to support digitization of the Registers of the Archbishops of York, 1225-1646.

The Archbishops’ Registers are one of the most important collections of historical materials to survive in England today.  The York series contain records of activity across the whole of the North of England and provides a unique insight into ecclesiastical, political and cultural history over a period that witnessed the dislocations of the Black Death, the Wars of the Roses, the Reformation and the English Civil War.

The funding will allow an ambitious programme to digitize the complete run of the Registers from the thirteenth to the seventeenth centuries. This will create one of the largest online facilities of its type and will be an invaluable tool for scholars and the wider public to conduct historical research.
