Global Health Histories 103 - 'United Nations, Health Systems & UHC: histories, present & future'

Wednesday 17 January 2018, 11.00AM

Speaker(s): John Manton (London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine), Sanjoy Bhattacharya (University of York), & Zafar Mirza (Director Health Systems Development, WHO EMRO)

The new Director-General of WHO, Dr Tedros has made achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) his top priority, championing it as a framework for putting people at the center of health systems.

However, UHC has always relied on the development of strong health systems. This seminar will examine the histories, present and future of efforts to strengthen health systems. The expert panel will consider first the outcomes of health planning in decolonizing states of Asia and Africa, the role of WHO Regional Offices in demanding equitable relationships, meaningful reform and development in international health, before evaluating the present standing and future of health systems and UHC.
