Pantheons: Sculpture and Faith at St Paul's Cathedral, c.1795-1914

Tuesday 14 July 2020, 9.00AM

Pantheons is a major, three-year, AHRC-funded research project, in partnership between the department of Art History at the University of York and St Paul's cathedral, exploring the sculpture at St Paul's across the long nineteenth century. The project's first conference is concerned with the intersections of sculpture and various world religions at the cathedral between 1795 and 1914. The conference will take the form of a series of short, ten-minute, object-focussed presentations on individual monuments, or small, related groups of monuments, by key scholars in the field as well as clergy. The conference will consider the place of Hinduism, Sikhism, Islam, Buddhism, and Judaism in the pantheon, as well as Christianity, in the form of New and Old Testament scenes, portraits of Bishops and other clergy, as well as Jewish, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, and Islamic iconographies and subject peoples. The day will conclude with a public, round-table panel under the dome of St Paul's.
